 Task 1

Which of the following do you think has the biggest influence on children’s values?

- Family

- Teachers

- Friends

【Response】

I think that family has the biggest influence on children’s values. Firstly, a child will probably only meet teachers and friends later in their life, whereas close family will be there from the very beginning, with the mom obviously being about to start teaching her child values from the day it’s born. Secondly, a child knows that his family has his best interests at heart. Friends and teachers may have other intentions, but close family, by and large, want to make the child into the best person they can be. Therefore, the child will pay more attention to the values that his family shows, and knowingly or unknowingly, add these values to his personality. For these reasons, I think that family have the most influence on a child’s values.

Task 2

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

People should spend time and work hard on things that they are not good at.

【Response】

I disagree that people should spend time improving things they are not good at. So, first of all, we only have a limited amount of time, and if we divided that between things that we’re good at and things we’re not so good at, we’d never be able to spend enough time on any of our strengths. By picking things that naturally cater to our strengths, we can focus on developing the skills that make us stand out as individuals. In addition to this, we want to remain happy when working on our skills. If we spend a lot of time on things which we have no real hope of becoming particularly skilled at, then we wouldn’t be motivated or happy. To truly be satisfied, we should spend time on things we’re good at.

Task 3

Task 4

Task 5

Task 6

 Integrated Writing

[Question]

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

It is better for older people to take risks and explore new things than for young people.

[Response]

Older people have more limitations than younger people, with their body, their mind, and in terms of the responsibilities they have. Taking risks wouldn’t matter so much without these limitations, but because they have these limitations, it’s worse for older people to take risks and explore new things than it is for younger people.

The most obvious limitation older people have is from the effects age has on their body. Certain activities that require good physical condition, and that can be dangerous if one is not fit enough, such as hiking or diving, should be avoided in this case. This may also prevent older people from switching to a new but physically demanding career, such as working as a personal trainer. Younger people, on the other hand, are likely to have certain advantages, such as having more energy, or being able to recover more quickly from injuries.

Age has other negative effects on the human body, reducing mental ability as well as physical.

Slow mental reaction times could be disastrous, such as if an older person were to experiment with trading on the stock market, with one slow sale potentially resulting in a lot of money lost. Poor memory could mean that older people overlook a certain item of safety equipment, such as forgetting to tighten a strap or secure a helmet. In contrast, younger people don’t suffer in these ways, and so can, for example, enroll on a difficult college course without experiencing too much stress.

Older people are also likely to hold many social responsibilities. This includes family. At this point in their lives, older people are likely to have at least one generation below them. If they fail, it could have negative effects on these family members. Older people could get injured and need care, inconveniencing their adult children, or enroll on a course only to find that it is too time-consuming, and so have less quality time to spend with their grandchildren. Younger people, however, have very few of these responsibilities, if any, and so are much freer to make big and disruptive life choices, such as moving across the world to work in a completely different country and culture.

With all of these limitations, of the mind, and body, and extensive social expectations, older people should consider very carefully if they want to engage in risky activities or endeavors, or, better still, not take such risks at all, for the good of themselves and others.
