Wear your dreams, my life in tattoos. By Ed Hardy and Joel Selvin.

Ed Hardy

Hardy was born in 1945, California. When he was 10 years old, he started drawing pictures on neighbours’ body with coloured pencil. With the time flies, in 1963, he attended San Francisco Art Institute. After graduation, he rejected a full scholarship from Yale School of Art. Since then, his tattoo artist dream began sprouting. In 2000, Hardy has licensed his brand, and now it is welcomed by the public, especially the celebrities.

Wear your dreams, my life in tattoos was published in 2013.

I’m not a public figure...all I ever wanted to do was to make art and be an artist.”

Question

好了,这里我有个问题: what is the genre of this book?

It is an autobiography

According to the dictionary, it means “a book about a person’s life, written by that person.”

Question

Just kidding! ?

Q1: Why we should read an autobiography?

A: Somehow, reading autobiography will let you experience other’s life.

A: It may inspire readers in different way.

As most stories in autobiography are true, so it is much easier to take them as examples for our own.

Q2: How to read an autobiography?

A: Think out of the box with open mind.

Tip

Before reading, browsing the content, pick one chapter you like and ask yourself:

1. What do you think it will talk about? Why? Any clues?

2. What have you already known about the story?

Before reading, I think in this chapter, Hardy may talk about his childhood, and may talk about the biggest event in his life: Why does he want to be a tattoo artist? It was someone inspired him or some activities stimulated him?

During reading, it is better to note interesting facts and ask questions related with that, this will rise more attention to carry on reading.

So, I ask myself, did he meet some celebrities which may change his life?

After reading, you need go back to the beginning and ask, does he/she have the similar life path as you expected ?

就像他自己说的那样: “ A couple of the artists I met, a few years older than me, helped broaden my perspective. I started hearing more about San Francisco.”

Asking questions continually while reading, it would help you comprehend the chapter better.

Tip

You could ask:

    1. Before reading, what do you expect to read in this chapter?

    2. Underline the confusing parts. What did you do when you got to that confusing part?

    3. During reading, what clues from the text help you figure out the questions you asked before?     4. What in your background knowledge makes you think that?
